The contrast between Central Park and the surrounding streets of Manhatten is simply shocking. I took a stroll this evening from Times Square up to Central Park and back crossing through Rockefeller Center as I made my way up Fifth avenue.
Walking in a big city is actually one of my favorite means of entertainment. There's no better way to get the feel for a town than to simply get out and pace up and down its boulevards. All told, I figure I must've clocked about 6 miles this evening, racing the hordes of tourists up and down the avenues. Times square was my actually my primary destination. It's only a few blocks north of my hotel, so after all my obligations were taken care of down at the World Trade Center, I decided to stroll on up to the Square. I haven't seen Times Square, or even Manhatten for that matter, in at least four years so I was curious to see what was going on. Unrelenting eye candy would be too kind of a description of Times Square. In the past few years, not only have all the smut dealers been run out of town, but they've also thrown up wall-to-wall video advertisements. For several blocks down each side of the street, the entire city shimmies and shakes to the beat of a dozen different individualized building-sized TV screens. It's beyond overkill. I was also rather surprised to take note of the sheer number of foreign tourists milling about the square. Well over half the people meandering to and fro were clearly speaking languages other than English as they pointed and squawked at the flashing billboards lining the square. Satisfied with my investigation of Times Square and with plenty of energy and daylight left, I decided to cut over and head up fifth avenue towards Central Park. Up and through the park for a bit, enjoying the contrast for a few minutes between the natural greenery of the park. As the sun set, I headed back down Seventh Avenue towards the hotel, stopping only for a six pack of beer and a deli-made turkey sandwich. Honey roasted turkey on a fresh kaiser roll. It was, quite simply, delicious and fresh. By the time I walked back into the hotel, I was actually quite tired from walking. That's when it's nice having a suite here in the big city with enough room to kick back and enjoy a tasty deli sandwich and a beer. |
