Little Mr. Good Times spent much of the weekend at my parents' house. I'm speaking of Eastland, of course, and I'm referring to the fact that Michelle and I are so overwhelmingly socially scheduled that it was necessary to resort to grandparent babysitters for several hours on Saturday and Sunday. Not that my father minded one bit.
Today was the annual USPro Championships bicycle race here in Philadelphia. Since it's inception, when it was still known as the Corestates rather than the First Union race, I've only missed one year of racing action. This year did not make two. It was a beautiful day for spectating a bicycle race down by the art museum. Expecting uncomfortable midday heat, Michelle and I left Eastland with my parents, left Riley at home to let his knee recover, and took Lacie downtown this morning. The bike race is one of those events that actually makes Philadelphia a wonderful place to live. I can't count the number of conversations we got into with random spectators lining the course. From the moment we walked up to the side of the road, people were chatting it up with each other, offering Lacie water, and cheering enthusiastically for bicycle racers they had never seen before and would likely never see again. But it doesn't really matter. It's a Philadelphia tradition now. And once something becomes a tradition in Philly, it's suddenly embraced wholeheartedly by the locals. Despite this friendly and enthusiastic attitude, we all noticed that the turnout for this year's race was a little on the light side. Previous years simply seemed more crowded. After a few moments of consideration, we came to the conclusion that many racefans decided to sit the event out this year due to all the hoopla surrounding the Sixers. The town is buzzing with excitement over the 76ers making it to the finals against the Lakers, and with a game scheduled for tonight, it was just too much sports action for many of the locals. We met Mike down at the race and if you want to see all the exciting action from the race, take a peak at his pictures. When we got finally got home to relax and watch the Sixers' game this evening, Eastland was one exhausted little guy. After spending much of the weekend with one set of grandparents, then having dinner tonight with the other set, he was simply worn out. And now, Mr. Good Times is simply passed out. Tomorrow's another day. |
