Easter Sunday
The St. Anthony's fair is a Delaware tradition. Michelle's family has been attending the festival since she was a young'un and since tonight was also her father's birthday, the entire clan packed up and headed down to Wilmington for a hearty Italian festival dinner.

The fair, itself, is a busy affair. There are temporary dining halls set up all around the big St. Anthony's Catholic Church with two fields of amusement rides and countless vending booths lining the crowded streets. They serve beer and wine, if you're of age, from numerous beverage stalls mixed among the cafeteria style food service. And among all of the eating and drinking, there are at least five stages with continuous live music pumping out traditional and contemporary Italian music at full volume.

We parked down the street and quickly made our way past the Panzorati booth (mmmmmmmm) and then to the nearest buffet line. I wheeled Eastland to a quiet table and waited for everyone to funnel through the service line.

It wasn't long before the quiet table turned into a rockin good time loud table. The next band hit the stage just a few seconds after my butt hit the bench. By the time everyone else showed up, the band was rockin and we all got busy shoveling food down to the funky beat of traditional Italian folk songs played live at full volume.

But the fun didn't end there.

Midway through our meal, we suddenly heard the sound of a small motorcycle engine buzzing through the trees. Everyone began to look around, searching for the source of the commotion when all of a sudden, a motorcycle blasted over the treetops along a highwire attached to one of the high gothic church towers.

But best of all, suspended beneath the motorcycle was a trapeze artist. The rider and gymnast blasted up the thin cable to the tower, paused for a moment, then rolled backwards back down into the trees.

At first, we all thought the show might be over. Within a few seconds of that thought, however, the engine blasted back to life and the pair shot back up the line once more. This time, they began to go through their entire routine, doing flips on the bike and the trapeze, barrel-rolling around the highwire, and rolling backwards on the wire while doing handstands and splits.

It was the perfect surprise show for the festival atmosphere. Their five minute routine was worth the entire evening at the fair. Good food, good music, and a surprise highwire act during dinner. I can see why the St. Anthony's fair has become such a tradition down there in Delaware.
