Walking the dogs tonight, we heard the sound of engines revving in the distance. Up and down the rumbling pitch would rise and fall. Every few minutes, the moaning would stop, only to be replaced by the sound of a woman's voice over a loudspeaker. We couldn't tell what, exactly was being said. Judging by the sound of things, though, we were willing to bet there was a racetrack somewhere in town.
As we scanned the horizon for lights, our attention was drawn towards the one corner in town that we haven't actually been through. I knew there were a few ballfields hidden back there, but I never imagined there was an actual racetrack. Coming back from the park, with the sound still rumbling over the horizon, Michelle looked at me and asked, "Wanna go find it?" Not one to pass up such an opportunity, we continued on past our front door and loaded the dogs into the back of the truck. Being pretty familiar with most of the town, we headed straight for that hidden section on the western edge of town. We turned right into a dark alley and slowly cruised between several old industrial buildings towards the lights over the hill. As we passed the first ballpark, we noticed a number of bright lights and a rather sizeable crowd gathered on the far edge of the field. There, hidden behind a row of nondescript brick homes was a small dirt track. We pulled the truck out into the field beside the track and walked over to the stands. Out on the track was a pack of miniature go karts piloted by a field of pre-teens. Round and round they were racing. Being rather young, they managed roughly three open laps of full fledged racing at a time. Then there would be a clumsy pile-up on one of the two ends of the track followed by half a dozen laps under yellow. Nonetheless, it was all quite entertaining. Parents shouted and cheered from the stands and the race speeds were actually quite surprising for go karts on a wet dirt track. It pays to investigate every corner of town. You just never know what you might find. |
