Easter Sunday
Eastland began crawling today. The first report of his movement came this morning, a few tenative and uncoordinated lurches across the living room floor. By nightfall, after a day of practice, he was efficiently and repeatedly shuttling himself from one corner of the room to the other. It's time to baby-proof.

What a contrast of events, the joy of Eastland's first day of mobility against the backdrop of yesterday's horrific terrorist attack. We sat in the living room this evening, a blanket spread wide and the ottoman pushed into a corner. Eastland crawled back and forth between Michelle and I as we sat and watched the nightly report on the unraveling events in New York and Washington.

Life goes on. We cannot afford to let our lives get put on hold by the nightmarish events of a few random madmen. There will be retribution, of course, but the best any of can do is to simply keep on living.

I went into work this morning and I was shocked and yet quite encouraged by the amazing number of other people who also were making the morning commute. Traffic was no lighter than normal and the streets were packed with people on their way into work for the day. The only hint that something had occured was the lack of helicopter traffic over the city and the heightened security requiring me to key into our office building this morning.

I went to work like normal and when I came home, I got to see my son crawl for the first time. And then, after watching him make a few laps of the living room for the first time, I went upstairs and hung an American Flag out in front of our house.

There are some things that can never be taken from us. And today, my seven month old son decided to make a point of that.

Eastland began crawling today.
