After two weeks in special care, Pedro finally came home today. He appears to be healthy and in good spirits and the only clue that he's been sick are the huge shaved patches on his sides and legs. He looks a bit silly with his bare midriff and the French poodle puffs on his front paws. But he's comfortable.
It's obvious that he's spent the last 13 days in a cage. He barely protested on the long ride home and when we finally let him out of his carrier, his gait was a bit stiff as he slowly stretched his legs. He immediately found himself a comfortable spot on a blanket on the couch and settled in for a nap. As soon as we offered him food, however, his spirits changed. His appetite is back, and it's as voracious as ever. He wolfed down a huge helping of wet food then made his way to his food dish and dined on a nice big serving of the dry stuff. His dinner completed, he suddenly took off and began racing up and down the hallways and exploring every corner of the house. Within minutes, he had found Miss Kitty and with the dogs in tow, began chasing her from one room to the next. The dogs were barking, Kitty was crying and Pepe was peeping. By all accounts, it looks like things are back to normal. Of course, no one can tell us what the problem was to begin with. There's actually an official category of illness for cats known as "Virus of Unknown Origin." It seems that occasionally, cats get sick, no one can figure out what's wrong with them, but after a week or two on fluids and antibiotics, they get better. Just about every feasible test was run on Pedro short of an autopsy and nothing was turned up. Other than a high fever, he was apparently fine. Tonight, other than his huge bald patches, he looks to be fully recovered. He's sitting by Michelle, snuggled as close as possible, grooming himself with slow deliberance. If you ask me, after two weeks in a cage with tubes hanging from his paws and all the poking and prodding, he's just happy to be home. |
