When generations collide a game of peek-a-boo is certain to follow. We ventured west to Harrisburg today to visit Michelle's great aunt Jane. Michelle's sister and little Tyler also came along for the ride, and it wasn't long after we got there that little Tyler and Great Aunt Jane were crawling across the floor together playing peek-a-boo with the chair cushions.
Great Aunt Jane will turn 85 this January, right around the time that our baby is due. When we arrived at her door, we were each greeted with a powerful bear hug, a cheerful howdy-do and a thick wafting cloud of cigarette smoke. Aunt Jane has a voracious appetite for cigarettes and is evidentally a world class chain smoker. The entire time we were with her, however, she only had one cigarette: a quick puff outside the restaurant at lunch while Tyler got a much needed diaper change. We figured by the amount she must normally smoke, it must have taken quite an effort to abstain for the duration of our visit. Within minutes of our arrival, Aunt Jane was tossing Tyler around and crawling across the carpet with him. I've rarely seen such a warm greeting. We got the full tour of her apartment though it was obvious who the real stars of the show were. Aunt Jane can't weigh much more then 95lbs soaking wet, but as she romped with Tyler and energetically told her stories, she easily managed to steal the show. Soon Tyler and Aunt Jane found themselves in the kitchen, entertaining one another with an impromptu game of peek-a-boo among the kitchen chairs. Sprawled across the kitchen, Aunt Jane would search for Tyler as he hid behind a chair cushion, then at the last moment, he would emerge, much to her surprise. It really was great fun for all the participants. There's always something new to learn from people when they're at the extremes of life. For Tyler, everything is new and wonderful, life is full of surprises. For Aunt Jane, every day is a blessing, meant to be lived to its fullest. Whatever the reason, when generations collide at the extremes of life, it's inevitable that a game of peek-a-boo will commence. |
